The First Step in Being A Responsible Nature Lover - Take Your Rubbish HOME

Despite the proliferation of shopping malls, there are still many Malaysian who enjoy the outdoors,

especially nature sites.  Hiking, off-road cycling, picnicking by the river, bird watching and camping are popular weekend retreats for many of us. 

And while we are enjoying nature, we are also putting a heavy burden on nature, as more and more people flock to ‘nature sites’.

This is especially true in Taman Warisan Negeri Selangor (#TWNS), a rich forest park that is next to the busiest and most populated region of Malaysia. Over 1 million people are visiting the 12 or so recreation sites within the Park every year.

These natural sites are suffering from man-made pollution.  The most obvious pollution is rubbish. 

So many of us bring picnic items into the Park, but then leave the rubbish and scraps behind for

someone else to clean up.  Some people do clean up their own rubbish, and put it into the bins provided at the nature site.  Unfortunately, wild animals such as monkeys jump into these bins and pull out the rubbish looking for food, scattering the rubbish  all over the Park as well. 

Sungai Tua (Ulu Yam), Kanching and Templer’s Park, Gabai Falls are all examples of popular sites with #TWNS that are suffering from rubbish pollution.  At many of these sites, the authorities do have staff to clean up, but with thousands of visitors, it is difficult to keep up.  We, as responsible nature lovers, have to do our part to keep these areas clean.

When you visit any nature site, TAKE YOUR RUBBISH HOME with you.  This way, the monkeys and other wildlife cannot get into the rubbish and the Park will be much cleaner.  Remind your friends to do the same.
